Robert graduated from Yale University in 1904 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy and he had specialized in mining engineering. He became a surveyor at the Pocohontas coal field in West Virginia from 1904 to 1914. He became a superintendant of several coal mines by 1914.
He returned to Dayton, Ohio in 1914. He became president of S.J. Patterson Company of Dayton upon the death of his father in 1915. The company was a firm of wholesale coal dealers in Dayton. The company also ran its own coal mines under the name of Weyanoke Coal Company and the White Star Mining Company.
Mr. Patterson was also a director of the Winters National Bank of Dayton (now Chase Bank).
