U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Tennessee State Teachers' College, in 1932, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Carthage, Tennessee. He was the Tennessee commissioner of labor, (1936 to 1937) and elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and the next the two succeeding Congresses, serving (1938 to 1944). After serving briefly in the U.S. Army, he was elected to the Seventy-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1945 to 1953) He then was elected to the United States Senate, serving (1953 to 1971). After leaving Senate, he resumed the practice of law and taught law at the Vanderbilt University, (1970 to 1972).
