He married Bessie Marie Brook on 24 June 1924 and together they had Carl Thomas, Nelson Jr, Robert, Marlene, Nancy and Melvin. He was the brother of Elma, Mary Edith and Earl and James "Babe". Sam was a former Harrison OH Police Chief, butcher and owner operator of Loos Roofing.
