LOCAL MINER HANGS SELF IN BARN

Walter Hord, 53, Found by Son Shortly After Noon Today Hanging to Rope

Well Known Local Man Believed to Have Ended Life on Account of Ill Health of Long Standing:

Walter Hord, 53, local miner, was found dead shortly after noon today by his son, Preston, in the loft of his barn back of his home, where he had hanged himself to a rope.

Mr. Hord was living by himself at his home, 502 Maple Street but his son Preston, who is employed in Detroit, was home on a few days visit and being out late last night slept pretty late this morning.

He said his father had been complaining much with his stomach and was up a number of times last night, and he heard him get up about 8:00 o'clock this morning but he went back to sleep. When he got up he began to wonder where father was and went to the barn to see if he was there. Climbing to the hay loft he saw his father hanging to a rope that had been fastened to a rafter. He immediately ran to the home of Alvin Hord, an uncle, and told him what happened. Dr. Wolfe was immediately called and said the man had been dead for some time. He was cut down and taken to the Chestnut funeral home. The rope had evidently strangled him to death as his neck was not broken.

Mr. Hord had been a suffered for a number of years from stomach trouble and he was not able to return to his work at Mine No. 9 this spring and was planning to leave for Detroit with this son this afternoon. His wife died about 3 years ago and this loss, coupled with ill health is believed to have prompted the deceased to end his life.

Mr. Hord's brother, Alvin Hord, stated that they were all visiting in the home of their sister, Mrs. L. F. Neubacher last night and his brother seemed to be in the best of spirits at that time.

Mr. Hord was born in Shelby County about 53 years ago, the son of L. D. and Jennie Hord. He came to Taylorville in 1891 and about thirty years ago he was married to Katie Oller, who preceded him in death about three years ago.

He is survived by three children, Preston of Detroit; Minor of Pana; and Mrs. Lillian Sober of Decatur. A granddaughter only one week old also survives.

He also leaves two brothers and one sister, all of this city. They are Alvin and Edgar and Mrs. L.F. Neubacher. He was a member of local Christian Church. No arrangements have been made for the funeral.

Note: In 1918 Walter worked for the Springfield Coal Company at Mine No. 8 in Taylorville. He registered for the Draft for World War I September 12, 1918.
Over the years the tombstone has been born smooth and cannot be read. In the fall of 2009 the tombstone had fallen and was lying on the ground.
