US Senator, Congressman. A colonel in the Rhode Island militia, he served in the expedition against Canada in 1759. After seeing service in the Revolutionary War, he was a general in the Rhode Island militia. He was elected as one of Rhode Island's first two senators and served from 1790 to 1793. He later served three terms in Congress, from 1801 to 1807. His mansion in Charlestown, Rhode Island, is now the General Stanton Inn.
