17 May 1897: Late on Saturday evening it was whispered about on the street that the condition of Edmund W. Mengel had taken a sudden turn for the worse, but this was discredited by many as he was reported to be improved. On Sunday morning when it became known that he had died the stoutest heart was moved to tears. He was confined to his bed two weeks with a complication of diseases. During his illness, loving hands ministered to his wants and the physicians did their best, but of no avail and at 1:15 a. m. in the presence of his family, passed quietly away. For a number of years, he conducted the bakery and confectioner at the corner of Main and College Street very successfully. In life he was a member of Frieden's Ev. Lutheran church and was a member of Myerstown lodge 358, Encampment 128, Abigail Lodge, D of R 310, I. O. O. F., Lebanon Valley Lodge 112, K. of P., Tulpehocken council 941 Jr. O. U. A. M. He is survived by a wife and daughter, Margaret, and also his mother. Deceased was a genial, obliging and liberal friend, a kind husband and an indulgent father. He enjoyed the acquaintance of a large circle of friends who with his family will miss his presence. His funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the home of his mother and after services in the Lutheran church, interment will be private at Mt. Hope cemetery. Saturday he was 27 years old and it also was the fourth anniversary of his marriage. [Lebanon Daily News]
