He received a life teaching certificate from Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma in 1927. Rolla taught school several years in the northwestern part of Oklahoma.
On August 11, 1929, Rolla married Olevia Daves and to this union one son was born, Lawrence Daves Blakley.
In 1931 the family moved to a farm near Arapaho, where they lived until 1953, when they moved to Oklahoma City. In 1948 Rolla was injured in a tractor accident and partially disabled. After moving to Oklahoma City he graduated from Barber College, but due to his disability was unable to continue as a barber.
