Governor of North Carolina. The son of Governor Kerr Scott, he was a dairy farmer in Alamance County before entering politics. He served North Carolina as Lieutenant Governor from 1965 to 1969 and as Governor from 1969 to 1973. He was also President of the state's community college system from 1983 until 1995. When asked in 2005 what he believed was his major achievement as Governor, Scott replied, "The greatest accomplishment of my administration will never be told. It was what did not happen." He was speaking of the years when the Vietnam War and racial unrest had a major impact across the state as well as the nation. Widespread violence that swept many parts of the country did not occur in North Carolina during Scott's time in office.
