DEATHS
Died--On the 15th inst., we were called upon to follow to her last resting
place, the mortal remains of Mother Ewing, wife of Rev. Finis Ewing, long
since deceased. Sister Margaret Ewing, or, as she was more familiarly
known, "Aunt Peggy," died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Sloan, in
Cass county, Mo., on Friday, the 11th inst. She numbered ninety-five years.
Her life, embracing a part of the seventeenth, and extending far into the
eighteenth century, including three entire generations of 33 years each,
minus four years only. She was the early companion of one of the immortal
three ministers of the Gospel who organized the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, viz' Finis Ewing, Samuel McAdow, and Samuel King. She saw her
church advance from three to twelve hundred ordained ministers; from one to
one hundred and five presbyteries, and a membership of 150,000. In the
bosom and full communion of the church she lived, and from it she took her
exit to heaven. She has fallen asleep in Jesus. She was the last of the
mothers of our church, to be made first in the kingdom of heaven. Her last
afflictions were severe, but brief. After an illness of three days, she
grew calm and rational, and on Friday morning breathed her life out sweetly
to God, who gave it. She died the death of the righteous. Brethren, friends
and kindred, we have not just cause to weep, except that our christian
virtues have not attained unto her standard. She quietly rests by her
husband's side.
