US Congressman and US Senator. He served five times as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates between 1788 to 1801. In 1795, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the Fourth and Fifth Congresses, serving until 1799. He was elected again to the Seventh Congress, serving 1801 to 1803 and was a member of the Virginia State Senate in 1808. In 1809, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until his death. William Leigh Brent Mayor of Washington, D.C., was his nephew.
