He was a veteran of the Austro-Hungrian War during which time he suffered a wound to the left leg. Enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Philip Sterner, ans assigned to Co. E, 165th PA Inf., serving at the rank of Private until honorably discharged with his company on July 28, 1863. Also volunteered in York September 2, 1864, with Co. B, 209th PA Inf. at the rank of Private. Broke his left arm in a fall during the final assualt on Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Honorably discharged with his company on May 31, 1865.
