Auditor Dies in Granville
William J. Webb, 80, Had Served County 30 Years; Funeral Set for Today
Oxford - May 8 - William James Webb, 80, Granville County auditor for 30 years died at 5:30 a.m. today in a Durham hospital after three weeks illness.
Because of illness in the family, a private family service is to be conducted at the home at 3 p.m. Monday. A graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery is to follow with the Rev. Thomas T. Traynham, Jr., Presbyterian minister in charge.
Webb was a son of the late James H. and Kate Russell Webb of Tally Ho Township. He was educated at the Webb School, Bellbuckle, Ten., and the University of North Carolina.
After a brief career as a teacher, Webb entered the tobacco warehouse business here before his appointment as county auditor and tax supervisor in 1924.
He was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church.
He was married to Sue Daniel of Granville County, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Dr. Bailey Webb of Durham, Mrs. Robert Williamson of Fayetteville, Mrs. A. M. Field Jr., of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mrs. S. M. Sloop of Mt. Ulla; a brother, J. F. Webb of Oxford; a sister, Mrs. F. H. Daniel of Stem, and four grandchildren.
