Otto , age 82 of Madison, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison.
He was born the son of Otto Carl and Blanche (Clapp) Breitenbach. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1941 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1948.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a pilot instructor from 1942-1946. He began his career at Edgewood High School as a part-time teacher and coach. Otto moved to Chilton, WI, and taught and coached as the head football and head basketball coach from 1948 to 1952. In 1952, he taught and served as the head football coach and assistant principal at Middleton High School until 1963. From 1963-1973 Otto was the athletic director, head football coach and head track and field coach at La Follette High School. During his tenure at La Follette, his teams won a football state championship and a track and field state championship. He became the associate athletic director for the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973. During this time he was also the commissioner for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Otto became the executive director of the Badger State Games from 1988 until 1997.
He married Patricia OMeara on July 3, 1945, at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison. In addition to his wife, Pat, he is survived by two daughters and one son, two brothers, five great-grandchildren,
Otto was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Peggy Breitenbach; and a sister, Betty Jane Breitenbach. Otto enjoyed reading, golfing and spending time in the Northwoods.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Jan. 5, 2007, at St. Mary of the Catholic Church, 5460 Mary Lake Road, Waunakee. Father Jay Poster, Father Roger Nilles, and Father James Kramer will concelebrate the Mass. A memorial visitation will be held at the Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave, Madison, on, Jan. 4, 2007, from 5-8 p.m. and again at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary of Lake Cemetery in Waunakee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, 5395 E.
