Brother of former U.S. Congressman, later C.S.A. Secretary of War James A. Seddon, he attended the University Of Virginia. Returning to Virginia after serving in the Mexican War, he married Mary Alexander Little in 1848. Living in Fredericksburg, Va., he was a delegate from Virginia to the Democratic National Convention in 1860.

At age 34, he enlisted on 5/14/1861, and was commissioned into Company D, 1st Virginia Battalion Infantry, as its Captain.
Served 5/1861-6/7/1861 as Captain, Acting Assistant Adjutant General to General Ruggles (also from Fredericksburg).
On detached service 9/5/1861 at Fredericksburg, VA.
Absent, sick on Jan & Feb 1862 Roll.
Promoted 5/20/1862 to Major, 1st Virginia Battalion Infantry.
He resigned due to disability on 10/11/1862.

He then served in the Virginia State Legislature.

He resided on the Rappahannock River at "Snowden", a few miles east of Fredericksburg. Union gunboats shelled Snowden, burning it to the ground, although they gave the family just enough warning for them to exit house and take shelter in a dependency.
