She was a daughter of Thomas Davis Meares and Jane Moore Iredell Meares.

She married George N. Harriss and they had eleven children. Nine children (three sons and six daughters) survived them. The surviving children were Jane Meares Harriss Delano (1875-1965), Caroline Brown Harriss (1878-1967), Katharine Meares Harriss Latimer (1879-1955), Frank Green Harriss (1883-1953), Meares Harriss (1886-1941), Margaret Iredell Harriss (1888-1956), Esther Exum Harriss (1893-1992), Eleanor Jennings Harriss Willetts (1896-1978) and George Nehemiah Harriss, Jr. (1899-1957).
