Salina Broughton was born about 1844-1851 in St. Mary's (Auburn), Wake County, NC, the 4th of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born farmers Joseph L. Broughton, Jr. and his wife, Mary "Polly" Bagwell.

Salina's date of birth as shown on this grave is in question. Records show she married in 1861, and her first child was born in 1862. Census data indicates she was born ca. 1844-45. If she was truly born in 1851, she would have been only 10 years old when her first child was born, which does not seem plausible.

She was the paternal grandchild of Joseph L. Broughton (1770-1814) who came to Wake County from Essex County, VA about 1795 and married Mary "Polly" Stancil of Johnston County. She was the maternal grandchild of Nathan B. Bagwell of Halifax County, who came to Wake County in the 1780's and married Sarah "Sally" Mainor.

On March 31, 1861, Salina married Yancey L. Smith (1836-1886) of St. Mary's and the couple farmed in that area for the rest of their lives.

Yancey was the son of Oswall (Oswald) Arrow Smith and his wife, Martha "Patsy" Rodgers of St. Mary's. He is a direct descendant of Richard Arrow Smith/Arrowsmith (c. 1750-1819) who came to Wake County from Virginia in the late 1770's and married Esther Sauls of Johnston County. It is known Yancey served in the CSA with the the NC 1st Regiment, but no further information was found on his service.

Salina and Yancey were parents to 10 known surviving children (2 boys/8 girls): Edward (c. 1860/died young), Mollie Irena (c. 1864), Lenora Norah (c. 1866), Sarah "Sally" (c. 1868), Lula B. (c. 1869), Minerva (c. 1872), Lonnie (c. 1873), Virginia (c. 1875), Miola (c. 1878) and Eva (c. 1880).

Salina was widowed in February, 1886 when her husband of 25 years passed at age 50. She survived him 4 years, passing in April 1900 at age about age 56. Salina is buried in Old City Cemetery near her brother, Lt. Gaston H. Broughton, and her sister, Louisa Broughton, who married Yancey Smith's 2nd cousin, Orrin A. Smith. It is not known where her husband was laid to rest.

This info is from a cemetery survey compiled in 1940 by the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina located in the Wake County Family Records Collection, State Archives. Please be aware that I have found numerous errors in spelling and dates, which leads me to believe that whoever transcribed the original had trouble reading the handwriting.
