Confederate Officer. Brother of Col. William C. Oates, 15th Alabama Infantry. While serving with the 15th Alabama he was mortally wounded during the attack on Little Round Top at Gettysburg, on July 2, 1863. He was ill on July 2 and advised not to go into the attack, but refused, stating it was his duty.

A large boulder is located near where he fell. Col. Oates states that this is where Lt. Oates was placed after his wounding. The boulder it not far from the 20th Maine Monument.
