Born Oct. 14, 1970, in Syracuse, he was a son of Richard and Maxine Bocyck Root.

He was active Navy, home on a short leave when he died. His full name is James Gerald Root but eveyone who knew him, inside and outside of our family, knew him as Jamie. He was born 14 Oct 1970 in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY and died 4 Dec 1990 in the Town of Norwich (the farm at East River Rd & Dan Main Hill Rd). He was home on leave because our grandmother was having major surgery in Mississippi and wasnt really expected to survive. After she was ok he came home to Norwich for a short visit before returning to duty. He was playing quick draw with what he thought was a weapon filled with blanks, but somehow a live round was mixed in and he accidentally shot himself in the head. The most amazing thing about him was that he was a troubled child, always in trouble, and my grandmother talked him into joining the Navy and it changed his life. The last conversation I had with him was a few days before he was to leave (died) and we were talking about the war (the first Gulf War) and he was telling me how much he loved the Navy and was going to re-enlist and that he hoped to be sent to the Gulf soon. He had made a change for the better and his death created a huge hole in the entire extended family that was extremely close.
