Family lore handed down from his son, Bert Nichols to Bert's daughter Louise: "At the time of his death, William Dixon had been living alternately with his son, Bert O Nichols of Upper East Clinton, IL, and his daughter's family in Clinton, IA. Grandpa would spend one week with Bert's family, walk the Mississippi River bridge to Lyons, IA, and spend a week at with his daughter's family. According to Bert, Grandpa took great joy in buying his grandchildren penny candy. So, on that fateful morning when Bert gave his a nickle for the bridge toll, it is believed that Grandpa (as he's done before) proceeded to walk across the frozen Mississippi River rather than pay the 5-cent toll to use the bridge so he'd have "candy money" to spend on his grandchildren." Sadly, Grandpa was not found until 28 May 1926, months after he started that fateful walk across the frozen Mississippi. Daily from 8 Jan, son Bert and his sister anxiously met on the bridge hoping to share updates of the search for their father.
