US Senator. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1809 and became a physician in Worcester County. Spence served in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1819 and 1821. In 1822 he won election to the US House of Representatives as an Anti-Jacksonian and served one term, 1823 to 1825. He did not run for reelection in 1824. In 1830 he served again in the state House of Delegates, and was also elected again to the US House of Representatives as an Anti-Jacksonian, serving one term, 1831 to 1833. In 1836, by now a Whig, he was elected to the US Senate, filling the vacancy caused when Robert H. Goldsborough died. Spence was reelected in 1837 and served from December 31, 1836 until his death. He was the uncle of Congressman Thomas Ara Spence.
