Mrs Nyhus was born June 1, 1901, at Fertile to Andrew and Olena (Ouverson) Elthon.
She attended school in Fertile and Lake Mills, graduating in 1918. She later attended Lutheran Bible School in Grand Forks, ND., graduating from the seminary in 1924. She was the first woman to earn a seminary diploma from that school.
On July 19, 1929, she was married to Arthur E. Nyhus at Fertile. They were missionaries in China from September, 1929 until 1940. Their daughter, Phoebe, died in the bombings in China in 1938. Another daughter, Ruth, was injured in the same bombings. They returned to the United States and served congregations in Fairbault, Minn., and Antler, ND., where they also traveled for missions. In 1950, she and her husband were sent to Japan for missionary work and were stationed in Noshiro. In 1951, the couple were transferred to Taiwan and served there until retiring to Fergus Falls in 1964. Mrs Nyhus suffered a stroke in January, 1979, from which she never recovered. She had been a resident of the Broen Memorial Home since that time.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur, Fergus Falls; one daughter, Ruth Nyhus, Portland, Ore.; one sister, Mabel Elthon, Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Esther Varberg and Ada Levang, and two brothers, Leo and Thelan, and a daughter, Phoebe.
