South Carolina Governor and Congressman and diplomat for the Republic of Texas. A Representative from South Carolina from 1822 to 1829, he also was Governor of South Carolina from 1830 to 1832. After moving to Texas, he became the diplomatic agent of the Republic of Texas to France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Belgium. He drowned when the steamboat he was traveling in sank in the Gulf of Mexico. He reportedly yielded his seat in a lifeboat to a woman and her child.
