John Walton Martin, age 80, passed away on May 27, 2023 at Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas after a long and brave 148 day battle with kidney disease, anemia, and cardiomyopathy. His intense strength of will was something to behold for all who witnessed it.

He was born on February 18, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas to Charles Early Martin, Jr. and Mary Semmes Walton Martin. Although a native Texan, he was the grandson of the fifth governor of Oklahoma, John Calloway "Jack" Walton and former first lady Madeline Orrick Walton. John Martin spent his youth living in various cities around Texas. He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas where he enjoyed football and sometimes played quarterback for his high school team. John went on to graduate from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas where he majored in biology and mathematics. It was during that time that he met Kathleen Joan Pryor at a street dance at Southern Methodist University. John and Kathleen were married on April 3, 1971. The couple was married for 27 years and had two children.

John became a business owner and general contractor having owned and operated JWM Construction, Inc., which he started in the late 1970s. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing throughout his life. At the age of 15, John and his older brother Charles summitted Mount Rainier in Washington State. John's love for wilderness travel took him on many adventures to remote locations in Alaska, British Columbia, Central America, and Africa.

John held leadership roles in the Dallas Jaycees Club in the 1980s, was a long-time member of Safari Club International, and was a director of Lonestar Hunting and Fishing Exposition in the 1990s. John enjoyed scuba diving in exotic locales, horseback riding, snow skiing and traveling both solo and with family. He was also an avid football fan and a regular patron of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

John was a keen observer of people with a clever sense of humor, frequently spouting wry one-liners. He was predominantly a positive thinker and encouraged others to share his optimism. He will forever be missed by his family and always admired for his brave stoicism. He is survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, Kathleen Martin of Plano, Texas, his daughter Kimberly Joy Everett and son-in-law Brent Everett of Plano, Texas, and son Jeffrey Walton Martin of Dallas, Texas.

A private memorial service and burial will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Rose Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In John's memory, flowers may be sent to Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Funeral Directors, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73116.
