Obituary

Thomas A. Frazier, Jr, 80, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014 from heart related problems. Mr. Frazier practiced tax law for more than 50 years in the Washington, D.C. area. He was preceded in death by his parents, U.S Army Brigadier General Thomas A. Frazier and Margaret Frazier, and his grandparents, Former Tennessee Governor and Senator James B. Frazier and Louise Frazier.
Mr. Frazier graduated from the Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN in 1951 and attended the University of Virginia. During Mr. Frazier's undergraduate years at the University of Virginia, he was elected to Phi Eta Sigma; the Jefferson Society; Lambda Pi; Arnold Air Society; Raven Society; and Phi Beta Kappa. He also served as a Cadet Major in the Air Force R.O.T.C. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1954 after only three years of study.
Mr. Frazier was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force He served on active duty as Information Services Officer until 1956 at Newburgh, New York and New Haven, Connecticut. He was later promoted to Captain in the Air Force Reserve, Judge Advocate General's Department.
Mr. Frazier returned to the University of Virginia Law School. He was class editor of The Barrister and freshman law class president. He was also a member of The Virginia Law Review serving on the editorial board (1957), the managing board (1958), and Comment and Projects Editor (1959). Mr. Frazier was also a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. He ultimately graduated first in the class of 1959, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and was named outstanding law graduate of the year by the Phi Delta Phi international legal fraternity.
Mr. Frazier clerked for Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark of Tennessee, before joining the Justice Department as one of its honors graduates assigned to the Trial Section of the Tax Division. He later entered private practice in Washington, D C as a tax attorney with Ivan Phillips and Barker. He became a partner with Alvord and Alvord and later Haynes and Miller.
Mr. Frazier was an active tennis, bowler and squash player until he discovered golf, a sport he enjoyed throughout his life. He was a member of the University Club and the Chevy Chase Club. His wit, charm, and kindness will be missed by all.
Mr. Frazier is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years; children; and three grandchildren; as well as two sisters.
A celebration of his life will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Washington D.C. on Sunday November 30, 2014 at 2 PM.
