Irving S. Gilmore was the son of James Gilmore, the founder in 1881 of Gilmore Department Store in Kalamazoo, MI. Irving was here for the 100th Anniversary of the store and succeeding branches in 1981, but closed in 1999.

Mr. Gilmore also founded the internationally famous Gilmore Piano Festival, which is held in Kalamazoo, MI. Western Michigan University has the Irving S. Gilmore Theatre as part of it's drama complex.

Irving's mother was Carrie Gilmore Upjohn, the wife of the founder of Upjohn Pharmaceuticals also in Kalamazoo, MI.
