Samuel Edwin Scott, MD

BURLINGTON - Dr. Sam Scott passed into eternity August 9, 2021.
Dr. Scott was born in Alamance County, NC, in 1937, to the late Dr. Floyd Scott and Frances Somers Scott.
He attended Pleasant Grove School through the tenth grade, and he graduated from boarding school at Woodberry Forest School, Woodberry Forest, VA. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959 with a degree in American History. Dr. Scott was fortunate to be a student in Chapel Hill for the team's NCAA Basketball Championship in 1957.
He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1963.
He met his wife of 59 years, Connie Thaggard, RN of Parkton, NC, at Richmond Memorial Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, the summer after his second year of medical school.
He completed a Family Practice Residency at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, Little Rock, Arkansas.
Dr. Scott volunteered for the physician draft and served as a Captain and Medical Officer in theAir Force during the Vietnam War assigned to the 4th Tactical Hospital. Upon discharge, the family moved back to Union Ridge where Dr. Scott practiced at the Scott Clinic for the next 35 years that were not in a vacuum. Under his watch, a medical practice and facility that was founded in 1919 were updated a generation from1949 standards to include a facility renovation, computerized business and pharmacy systems, and equipment for major emergencies.
Dr. Scott was on the Alamance Memorial Hospital Medical Staff and served as aMedical Examiner for both Alamance and Caswell Counties. Dr. Scott was a charter member of the American Board of Family Medicine, and he was the first physician in Alamance County to be certified by the Board.
He was a Trustee Emeritus of Elon University.
Dr. Scott was a life longmember of Union Ridge Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Scott is survived by son, Edwin H. Scott, MD, and wife Joy Watson Scott, RN, COTA/L of Augusta, Georgia, and daughter, Senator Amy Scott Galey, and husband Lt. Col. Fred Galey, Jr., USAF Ret., of Union Ridge. Surviving grandchildren are Sarah Scott, Mary Galey, Rachel Scott, Jack Galey and Sam Galey. Dr. Scott was predeceased by brothers, Dr. Peter S. Scott and Dr. Ludwig G. Scott, and sister, Ora Lee Brady.
A memorial service will be held at Union Ridge Church on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dan Ficklin and Rev. Ervin Milton, presiding. Visitation will be in the Fellowship Hall of the church on Friday, August 13, 2021 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Ridge Church Cemetery Fund, 115 Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road, Burlington, NC 27217 or The Scott Collection, Alamance Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 8000, Graham, NC 27253.
