Older son of Elizabeth Hoar and Samuel Bowles IV. A brilliant but tragic figure who refused to follow the path cleared for him in infancy. In a letter to his long-suffering mother dated July 12, 1912, he wrote "As long as I live my own life, I don't care whether the sledding is rough or smooth." He lived his own life, and the sledding was smooth at first and ever rougher thereafter.
