U.S. Senator. He graduated from Yale College in 1884, from the Washington University Law School in 1886, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in St. Louis, Missouri. He also was a professor of medical jurisprudence at the Missouri Medical College and a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives (1895-96). In addition, he was judge of the circuit court of St. Louis (1897-1903), Captain in the Missouri Home Guard and chairman of the draft board (1917-18), during World War I. In 1918, he was as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William J. Stone and served until his death following complications from hernia surgery.
