Born on July 24, 1931, in Baltimore, he was 89 years old and leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Charlotte; two daughters: Anita Wolf (Todd) and Heidi Zhang; four grandchildren Marshall & Owen Wolf and Edward & Charlotte Zhang; his brother Edwin Butler (Pat) and his sister Maria Scharrer. He was predeceased by his parents, Senator John Marshall Butler and Marie Louise Abell Butler.
John proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1951-1959, with his most memorable time being as a sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA-41). Following his Navy service, he enjoyed a career in engineering with various firms in the Baltimore area, culminating with a position supporting the US military overseas at Bad Aibling Station, Germany.
John was a longtime member of Central Presbyterian Church, serving the congregation as a deacon. Besides his faith and his family, his joys in life included building and sailing model sailboats, saltwater fishing, traveling abroad, and spending time with family and friends at the family condo in Ocean City. Forever the adventurer, Opa will be deeply missed.
