Dr. Homer E. Massey of Nogal, NM, passed away on January 29, 2021, peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He was one of four children from Erin, TN. He was born on January 29, 1933. He served in the United States Army for nine months and was honorably discharged for being too young. He later joined the United States Navy and served four years and was stationed on the U.S.S. Intrepid. He was a member of a twelve-man detail which helped reopen Barin Field for pilots training for combat in Korea.
While stationed in Foley, he met and married the love of his life, Helen E. (Nelson) Massey known as Jean. They were married for nearly 40 years before her passing in April 1992. They had four children, Homer Edward, Jr., Cynthia Jean, Charles Emile, and John Mark.
Homer was a graduate of Sanford University in Birmingham, AL and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. During his educational career he earned his Bachelor of Arts, two master’s degrees and two doctorates – including an EdD and a PhD. He was a man of many talents and endeavors, but the two passions of his life were his ministry in the Southern Baptist Church and his service as a teacher at Foley High School (Alabama) for more than 20 years. His service to the Church included his role as the administrator and associate pastor at University Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX and pastor of Glorietta Baptist Church, Glorietta, NM. After retiring in 2015, he returned to New Mexico to be with family and helped build three log cabins in the Sacramento Mountains.
He is survived by his four children and five grandchildren, Charli Elisabeth Massey, Kristian Elaine (Massey) Price, Uriah J. Shelton, Natalie Elise Plante and Jakob Michael Plante.
We will celebrate his life and memory at 10am on February 11, 2021, at Pine Rest Cemetery, Foley, AL.
