SAN ANSELMO - Doris Miller Harnsberger, 78, of San Anselmo, California, died Thursday, November 23, 2000 of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Mrs. Harnsberger was born March 29, 1922, to Fred and Kathryn Miller of Glen Rock, New Jersey. SHe graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. She received a master's degree in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1947.
In 1943, she married Hugh F. "Hutch" Harnsberger, a classmate who was then serving as a Japanese Language Officer with US Naval Intelligence.
She devoted her career to education in the Marin County School system, where she taught Science, outdoor recreation and career training at Red Hill Middle School. She was Marin County Teacher of the Year in 1985 and a curriculum consultant after her retirement.
She was a lifelong advocate for the underprivileged and was co-founder of the Ross Valley Ecumenical Housing Association, which developed the Tam House for seniors in San Anselmo. She was also active in the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo for 40 years, serving as a teacher, deacon and elder and in the choir. She had a positive effect on the lives of many, and a new cherry tree has been planted across from San Anselmo City Hall as a living memorial.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh F. Harnsberger; four sons, Tom, Ric, Doug and Steve; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Fred J. Miller, Jr.; two best friends and caregivers, Nancy Marriner and Patricia Greenough; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Dr. JAmes and Ann Harnsberger of Indian Creek.
A memorial service was held in San Anselmo on Sunday, December 3.
