Alexander Farnese was the son of Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma, and Margaret, the illegitimate daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He reigned as the Duke of Parma, Piacenza and Castro from 1586 to 1592, as well as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1578 to 1592.

He was married on November 11 1565 to the Infanta Maria of Portugal, a granddaughter of King Manuel I, by whom he had three children.
