He met Mildred Alice Christianson while at Union College and they were married June 19, 1947 at Onawa, Iowa. Soon after they were married, they moved to the New England area where he accepted a position as a Literature Evangelist where he began his internship. Merle became ill during this time, so they moved to Oregon in 1951 to be near his family. They lived at Tigard, Oregon and then moved to Grants Pass in 1956.
He called Grants Pass, “the banana belt” and they have lived here ever since. Merle and Mildred Alice were well known in the area for the “New Start Cooking Schools” which were held at the Seventh Day Adventist Community Center in Grants Pass, OR. Merle also preached at many Seventh Day Adventist Churches in the area. A high point in their lives was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Mildred Alice preceded him in death on July 19, 2013. Merle learned to cook and prepare raw vegetables, fruits and nuts for himself after his wife died. He enjoyed bird watching and kept up with the news. He liked to study the Bible and religious books and had a big library.
Merle Gene Tillotson was one of seven children of Ezra and Grace Mae (Stratton) Tillotson. He was one of 53 first cousins on the Stratton side. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl & Vernon and three sisters, Genevieve, Irma & Doris. He is survived by his youngest sister, Mildred Loraine (Tillotson) Ringering, along with many nieces and nephews.
