Though the stone states Thomas was born in 1779, it seems more likely he was born in late 1777 or early 1778, just after his parent were married. This would have made him close to 20 years old at the time his oldest daughter was born. Thomas was a Methodist minister, farmer, and county surveyor. He received his education in Abingdon, Maryland and later Gloucester County, Virginia.
