This portrait and facsimile signature is from the frontispiece of the book A MEMORIAL OF GILES F. WARD, Jr., Late First Lieut., Twelfth N.Y. Cavalry, by William Ives Budington, D.D. (New York: Anson D.F. Randolph, 1866). He had served as 1st Lt., 92nd Regt. N.Y. Infantry, and as Adjutant of that regiment, and as Aide de Camp on the staff of Gen. I.N. Palmer, and finally as 1st Lt., Co. L, 12th Regt. N.Y. Cavalry. He was killed accidentally by a fellow officer in the 12th Regt. N.Y. Cavalry (by that fellow officer's handling of that fellow officer's pistol), six miles from Coleraine, N.C. (not while in combat).
