IN LOVING REMEBRANCE OF OUR
CONFEDERATE DEAD
CIVIL WAR 1861-1865
This tablet was placed on this monument by the United States to mark the burial of
twenty-four Confederate soldiers who, while prisoners of war, died at Evansville and
were buried here in this cemetery, where the individual graves cannot now be identified.
They were treated at the first hospital in this area - The Marine Hospital - once located on the westside, near the Ohio River - on the hill next to the now Hillcrest Home just one block west of St. Joseph Ave and the Lloyd Expressway.
