The 1st Independent Battery, Minnesota Light Artillery was organized at Fort Snellng, Minnesota on November 21, 1861. It mustered out on July 1, 1865 at St. Paul, Minnesota.

John had a son named Frank with an unknown woman.
finally, several children with Henrietta "Hattie" Julia Bishop.
He worked in the logging business in the later years of his life.
At some point he was admitted to the Old Soldiers' Home in Hennepin, where he died July 19, 1911.
