James E. Northcott was the son of Thomas Northcott and his wife Sarah Baxter.

He married Christy Ann Carr, daughter of Andrew Carr and his wife Grace McGriger.

The 1871 Census of Canada records that he was farming at Lot 17, Concession 6, Caradoc Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. At the time of the 1881 Census of Canada, James was employed in Melbourne, Ontario as a Wagon & Carriage maker.

The 1891 and 1901 Censuses record him farming in Caradoc Township. By the time of the 1911 Census of Canada, he was residing in Strathroy, Ontario.

According to information provided on the death registry, James was employed as a Builder in Strathroy in 1924. James died at home on Front Street in Strathroy, Ontario. The cause of death listed on the death registry was Hemorrhage of the Brain. James was buried on November 7, 1924.
