Mathewson Alexander was a quiet and gentle man. He grew up in Powasson, Ontario. His father died when he was young man about 25. He served as a private in WW1 but was gassed and had his arm dislocated early in his service causing him to be discharged prior to the wars' end. He met his wife Agnes on leave in Scotland and brought her back to Canada as his bride in 1918. We know that he was half Indian but none of the records found regarding his family indicate this. His mother is listed as Helen Alexander on her wedding certificate born in Scotland. His father is listed as James Agusta Harris Alexander born in Ontario but the only photo located showing him with his mother clearly shows her as the Ojibwe.
My fondest memory of Mathewson is his sitting on his back porch with small pieces of bread spread with peanut butter. The squirrels are lined up to sit in his hand to eat a piece.
He died at the age of 80 after his 5th heart attack without one cavity and all of his teeth intact and a full head of gray thick hair. He was quite handsome and had beautiful grey eyes.
