U.S. Congressman. Elected as a Jacksonian to represent Ohio's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1833 to 1835. Before entering politics, Lytle earned a law degree in Louisville, Kentucky, was admitted to the bar, and practiced as an attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio. He became Hamilton County's Prosecuting Attorney and served in the Ohio House of Representatives. He was elected to the 23rd Congress of the United States in 1832 and lost a bid for re-election in 1834. He resumed his law practice in Cincinnati and later became surveyor-general of public lands in the Northwest Territory, the third member of the Lytle family to achieve the position. He was also a Major General in the Ohio Militia. He was the father of Brigadier General William H. Lytle, an acclaimed poet who was killed in battle during the Civil War. Lytle Park in Cincinnati, located on the former grounds of the Lytle mansion and estate, is named for his family.
