Name also appears on some documentation as Nels. Immigrated to the United States in 1873 and worked as a paper maker and later a roundsman for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in Clinton, Iowa. Married Elizabeth Petersen ca. 1876. Later in life they lived in Pasadena, CA with their daughters Sophia and Mary. They had 7 children, 3 of whom were still living in 1910:
-Sophia Matthiesen Seymour, 1878-1974
-Mary E. Matthiesen, 1882-1948
-Walter Erhart Matthiesen, 1889-1951
