2nd Arkansas Governor, Mexican War Army Officer. After his term as governor, he became a colonel during the the Mexican-American War. At the Battle of Buena Vista, his Arkansas regiment was routed in an attack by Mexican lancers. Yell led a desperate countercharge to stem the retreat. His reins broke and he lost control of his horse. Mexican lances pierced his face and chest, killing him instantly. He was buried at Saltillo. His body was later removed to a family plot in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and finally interred at Evergreen Cemetery in that city.
