US Senator. He was a sea captain from a prominent Rockingham County family. Parrott held several local offices before serving in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1809 to 1814. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1812. From 1816 to 1817 he was US Naval Officer for the District of Portsmouth. In 1816 he won election to the US House as a Democratic-Republican, serving one two-year term. In 1818 he was elected to the US Senate and served one term, 1819 to 1825. In 1826 he was appointed Postmaster of Portsmouth, and from 1830 to 1831 he was a member of the New Hampshire Senate. Parrott was also an inventor of naval ordnance, a vocation carried on by his sons Robert and Peter. Robert Parker Parrott changed the conduct of warfare when he invented the Parrott Gun, which used a rifled barrel to improve the accuracy and distance of artillery and naval gunfire.
