US Senator. Educated for the legal profession in England, he was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, and a member of the South Carolina State Senate. In 1804, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Pierce Butler and served until his death at age 60.
