Sonya Settlemyre Abernethy, 51, of Hickory passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Duke University Hospital.

She was born March 10, 1966 in Catawba County to Joe and Millie Setzer Settlemyre of Newton. Sonya was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Claremont and attended St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Maiden. She was a 1984 graduate of Bandys High School and a 1988 graduate of NC State University and was employed with Catawba Science Center. Sonya was a member of the YMCA and enjoyed the beach, hiking, reading, crosswords puzzles, running and NC State athletics.

She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Homer and Mary Setzer and paternal grandparents, G.A. and Annie Settlemyre.

Those left to cherish her memory are;

Husband of 27 years: C. Scott Abernethy of the home

Daughters: Jordan Abernethy of the home
Kirstin Abernethy of the home

Parents: Joe and Millie Setzer Settlemyre of Newton

Brother: Brian Settlemyre and wife Lue of Conover

The family would like to recognize the outstanding care provided by the teams at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Carolina Oncology, CVMC Infusion Center, and the Bone Marrow transplant unit at Duke Medical Center. Sonya touched many lives during her journey and will be missed by all.

A service to celebrate Sonya’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Maiden. Rev. Nathan Yoder and Rev. Todd Garren will officiate. Burial will follow at Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Claremont. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.
