Lola (Henry) Sconyers was born June 23, 1896 in Waterloo, within the county of Laurens, South Carolina. She was an off-spring from the union of Edward and Clara (Davenport) Henry. Lola was the youngest of four children, two girls and two boys. Her mother died in childbirth. Her father died when she was eleven years old. She had to raise herself from that time.
Lola married T. Smith at the age of fifteen. One child was born from this union. Shortly after this marriage, Mr. Smith passed away.
It was in Midville, Georgia where she meet Rev. Henry S. Sconyers. they were married. Rev. Sconyers had five children from a previous marriage. There was a loving relationship between the new family. From this union there were four additional children.
The family moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina. There, she joined the Macedonia Baptist Church, where she was a member for many years.
Lola came to Chicago in 1936. She did domestic work which enabled her to bring the remainder of her family to Chicago. Her husband, Rev. Sconyers, died in 1941.
She united with the Pilgrim Baptist church, the late Rev. J.C. Austin, Sr., Pastor. She later joined the Progressive Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Rev. T. E. Brown. Lola remained at Progressive. She was a member of The Gospel chorus, The Keep-A-Glow club and the Senior Mission.
She passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 1992 at 9:45 pm at St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island. She leaves to mourn her passing: her son, James W. Sconyers; her daughter-in-law, Helen; ten grandchildren: nineteen great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
She will be laid to rest at Lincoln Cemetery and share a gravesite with her husband Rev. Henry Sconyers.
