Ellen was born to Wilmer Lee Smith and Grace Augusta Fallon on June 16, 1901 in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Her parents married on 9/12/1900 in Steele County, Minnesota. When she was about five months old, her father died from “liver complaint resulting in diabetes.” according to the Blooming Prairie News, December 4, 1901. Grace remarried on 11/25/1908 in Steele county, Minnesota to Jes Brown (sometimes his name is listed as Jesse or Jess in records). Jes adopted Ellen. In 1910, Grace died (causes unknown at this point), leaving Jes to raise Ellen. Ellen married Emil Norgaard on 5/4/1922 in Steele County, Minnesota. They had four children: Emily, James, Mervel, and Wilmar. At some point after Emil’s death, Ellen moved to Georgia and lived with Mervel and his family until her death in 1987.
Per Norgaard oral family history, Ellen was deeply religious and considered a fanatic, was a pack rat, and use to clean houses for a living. At one point she also worked for Blume’s (sp?) in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.
