Tunkhannock Paper
Lyman Luce Krewson
July 16, 1999
Lyman Luce Krewson, 70, of Swiftwater, died Friday, July 16, at his home after a two year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Patricia Lincoln Krewson. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in September. Together they published News of the Poconos , since 1976.
Born in Tunkhannock, he was the son of the late Cecil K. and Lucinda Luce Lyman Krewson. He was the son-in-law of Amelia Lincoln and the late Joseph Lincoln.
At age 14, he became a sports writer at his family newspaper in Tunkhannock and he continued in the publishing business for the next 56 years. While at the Tunkhannock New Age, he won several Keystone Press Awards for writing. He was sports editor, an associate editor working with his parents, and eventually co-editor with his brother Cecil K. Krewson Jr.
He helped found and incorporate the Professional News Media Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania and served two, two-year terms as president. For many years he was active in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association.
Besides being a sports editor, he was dedicated to promoting youth sports in Tunkhannock. He co- founded and incorporated the Tunkhannock Baseball Association, where he served as secretary for 17 years, and the Tiger Booster Club, serving two terms as vice-president.
He was a member of Triton Hose Company No. — in Tunkhannock, since 1948.
In 1956, he began writing "Just Krewson Around." The column continued for 43 years, first chronicling life in Tunkhannock and later entertaining readers with tales of the Poconos and tourism. It was in the column he introduced a fictitious group, "Junior Senior Citizens," for those "over 40 but not over the hill." After moving to the Poconos in 1974, Lyman and Pat made the group a reality with more than 500 members across the United States. They escorted group tours to Hawaii six times, Colorado, Florida, California and many other locations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children and their spouses, David and Debra Krewson of Clarks Summit, Gery and Gina Krewson of Bloomfield, Conn., Mary and John Perez of Paradise Valley, and Cathy and Cecil Kiethline Krewson III of Henryville; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Mary of Tunkhannock; and many nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no funeral services and his body was donated to the Humanities Gift Registry in Pennsylvania. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, the Monroe County Cancer Center or the Monroe County Unit of the American Heart Association. A journalism scholarship will be established in his name.
