I am thrilled to hear Pieper and Pommern in the same breath! I was living in Germany and while there, was researching my German roots. My Pieper ancesters came to this country at the end of the 1800's. I traced them back to Luisenthal bei Lubzin in Pommern. We actually went to look for the town. It was effectively removed after the Germans lost WWII. When they pullled out of what is now Poland, they burned or took everything so as not to leave the Polish moving in anything to start with. When we asked the families there now about what it was like before 1946, they didn't have a clue. It was like it didn't exist before that time. They were just told that if they moved there after the war, they could have the land to farm, etc.

My family dropped the e from Pieper when they came to the States. They are Piper. They came to the US from Hamburg.
Wilhelm Pieper m. Maria Wegner in Luisenthal bei Lubzin in Pommern. She died there (I think), and he went to live with his son Franz Heinrich Albert Pieper in Hamburg-Altona, Germany.

Wilhelm died in Hamburg, Franz. Heinrich Albert Pieper was reported to have been born in Luisenthal bei Lubzin, Sept 4, 1864 and died in Mecklenburg in a hospital during the war in 1943. Franz had 5 children. One was Carl Freidrich Wilhelm Johannes Pieper, my grandfather.
