Sidney was the son of the Honorable Philip Norborne Nicholas (Attorney General of Virginia) & his second wife, Maria Carter Byrd. (Ref: Marriage Record of Sidney Smith Nicholas).

He enlisted in the 3rd Company, Richmond Howitzers on 21 April 1861, and was discharged on 23 December 1861. on 16 April 1862, he was commissioned into the Confederate States Navy as an Acting Master. He was promoted Assistant Paymaster on 25 March 1863, and spent most of the War stationed in Richmond.

In 1880, he and Salina were living in New York City, where he worked as a salesman.
